Polymarket Leverage Guide: Risk Math from 2x to 20x (October 2026)
Polymarket Perps offers up to 20x leverage on crypto, S&P 500, oil, gold and silver markets, and up to 10x on other real-world assets. The core risk math: initial margin is Notional / Leverage, but maintenance margin is flat per market at 0.5 / MaxLeverage of notional — so halving your leverage does not halve your liquidation distance, it roughly doubles your survivable adverse move.
What leverage is available where?
| Market group | Max leverage |
|---|---|
| Crypto (BTC, ETH, majors) | 20x |
| S&P 500, Oil, Gold, Silver | 20x |
| Other RWA underlyings | 10x |
Leverage tiers cap effective leverage as positions grow: larger notional forces
lower configured leverage and higher initial margin. The cap applies to your entire
position plus resting orders on the heavier side — an order that would push you
into a lower-leverage tier is rejected with invalid_leverage.
The two margins that matter
IM = Notional / configuredLeverage (entry requirement)
MM = Notional × (0.5 / marketMaxLeverage) (liquidation line)
Worked example — $100 collateral, 20x-max market:
| Leverage | Notional | IM | MM | Adverse move to liquidation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20x | $2,000 | $100 | $50 | ~2.5% |
| 10x | $1,000 | $100 | $25 | ~7.5% |
| 5x | $500 | $100 | $12.50 | ~17.5% |
Same $100 collateral in every row — only the notional and the survivable move change. Note MM at 20x equals half your posted margin: a max-leverage position liquidates after losing roughly half its margin, while lower leverage widens that buffer dramatically.
What is the margin-call zone?
Between IM and MM sits the margin-call state: equity below initial margin but above maintenance. In it you can only reduce exposure or deposit — no new risk. Three states, evaluated continuously:
| State | Condition |
|---|---|
| Healthy | Equity ≥ IM |
| Margin call | MM ≤ Equity < IM |
| Liquidation | Equity < MM |
Cross vs isolated: how does margin mode change the math?
- Isolated (web app default): each position backs itself with its own allocation. Liquidation takes only that position
- Cross (API opt-in): the account’s shared collateral backs all cross positions. One position’s losses consume the collateral protecting the rest, and liquidation evaluates the whole cross account
What does funding do to leveraged positions?
At 20x, hourly funding multiplies through the notional: a 0.01% hourly rate costs 0.20 on 2,000 notional — 0.2% of your 100 equity per hour, 4.8% per day if it persists. Leverage does not change the funding rate, but it multiplies the notional the rate applies to.
FAQ
Q: What is the maximum leverage on Polymarket Perps? A: 20x on crypto, S&P 500, oil, gold, and silver markets; up to 10x on other real-world assets. Effective leverage steps down as position size grows through risk tiers.
Q: Why is maintenance margin 2.5% at 20x? A: The formula is flat per market: MMR = 0.5 / MaxLeverage = 0.5/20 = 2.5%. It equals half the initial margin rate at maximum leverage.
Q: Does lowering my leverage lower my liquidation threshold? A: No — MM stays the same per market. Lower leverage raises your initial margin and widens the gap between entry and liquidation, which is the actual safety gain.
Q: Can I be forced to reduce leverage on a bigger position? A: Yes. Leverage tiers cap maximum leverage as notional grows; orders that would exceed the tier cap are rejected until you lower your configured leverage.
Q: Which margin mode should beginners use? A: Isolated — the web app default. Losses are capped at the position’s allocation. Cross margin is for traders managing an account-level book, not a single view.
